Success Cottage was sold November 1, 2015. The new owners were guest for many, many years and will now use the cottage as their private vacation home. Thanks to each of our return guest. You were wonderful! Happy Thanksgiving.
A clearing, with a cottage with large oversized windows. “Everything man-made here was truly made by the hands of those who live here, of those who live with what they have made. It took time, and is growing still because it’s alive.”
This line from the poem, “A Clearing” by Denise Levertov accurately describes Success Cottage. After selling our “big house” as our family affectionally refers to our previous home, and building our retirement home in Success (our first cottage) this small, unique community, mostly descendants of farming families, became home to us. At first, this small community seemed like a maze of small roads, some so narrow you would have to pull off to the embankment if you encountered another vehicle. The roads are named for farms, or farmers, or other patriarchs or matriarchs of the community. Blackwell Farm Road, Ira Johnson Road, Hood Road are all roads that lead to home. To our neighbor’s homes, our home, and to Success Cottage. Now that we are acquainted with most of our neighbors traveling these roads is a rich journey of intriguing stories of an era gone by. Future post will include some of my journal entries of porch visits with elders, some who have since passed. A post Civil War grave site of the Harvesters, (turpentine gatherers) is a personal favorite and is located only two miles away. I’ve recently retired and my plans are to delve into the history of this place, now so much a part of us. Its my new way of spending time.
While building Success Cottage, hopes of attracting history buffs, artists, birders, golfers, fishermen (and fisher-women) became our vision. Our barn was built to house the boat and it is launch ready! We hope retirees, who enjoy watching the sunrise and sunset will be our guest on our beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast for long, extended stays. Folks who enjoy long walks with stick in hand and binoculars hanging around the neck with small bird book tucked in their pocket. Folks not in a hurry that would enjoy a piece of homemade huckleberry pie or toast with huckleberry jelly. Guest that would return, time and time again, to explore with us this grand place called Success Community.
Success Cottage belongs here. It is truly in a clearing, a cottage with large oversized windows. Everything is man-made here, truly made by the hands of those who live here, of those who live with what they have made. Come visit soon.
